Headwaters of the Frio Marathon / Half Marathon

A Note from our Race Director

Dear Runner/Walker:  You are being offered unprecedented and unparalleled access to one of the most extraordinary ranches in all of Texas.  I personally hiked 82 miles over 6-days plotting the marathon/half marathon course to be one that you will never forget!  It is stunning!!  As someone who has run 17 marathons and over 75 other races from 5K to Half Marathon, I wanted a course beyond all courses!  I pushed a measuring wheel the entire 26.2 miles - up hills, down hills, through valley canyons, across stream beds (complete with amazing dinosaur tracks) and the Frio River, through Longhorn and horse pasturelands, over rocks, roots, ravines, witnessing amazing birds, flowers, and wildlife along the way.  This course has it all.  Whether you do the entire marathon or the half marathon, individually, or as a team, we hope this will rank right up there with the greatest run or walk you've ever done.  We are also hard at work to make this one of the most Family Friendly race events in history!

The purpose of the event in raising support for Big Springs Ranch for Children and sister ranch, Hill Country Youth Ranch is so incredibly worthy.  We promise you the ultimate in the stewardship of the funds you raise. Here's what we'll accomplish with the funds raised.

The money raised through the Headwaters of the Frio Marathon/Half Marathon will go directly into our Children’s Fund, which is our all-purpose fund that ensures the provision of the essentials for our children – food, clothing, housing, and transportation – plus the basic amenities of holiday celebrations, weekly allowances, birthdays, recreational activities, educational adventures, and a wide variety of life enrichment experiences.  With 110 children living with us at any given time, we need to raise $2,000,000 a year to supply these elements of a healthy childhood.  That’s $18,000 a year per child, and it includes all the support services and personnel that go with these basics.  About half of that amount is raised through operational grants, bequests, thrift store sales, and endowment income.  The other half must come from individual donations and special events.  It’s a tall climb each year, and we need your help to make it happen!

The web-site gives you great tools to assist in your fundraising efforts.  Over the past 2 1/2 years, I had the extreme joy as a grassroots fundraiser myself to participate in four separate UltraHikes for these very ranches.  My two cornerstones of fundraising are:  1) "You Have Not Because You Ask Not" - therefore, ASK! ... and 2) Leave No Stone Unturned - Ask everybody on the planet you have even an inkling of a connection to.  There were over 1,000 people who came alongside my efforts, donating over $355,000 to accomplish 40 "Dream List" projects/enhancements at Big Springs Ranch for Children and Hill Country Youth Ranch.  The fundraising minimums we have set for you for the full marathon ($2,620.00) and for the half marathon ($1,310.00) are so very achievable, and we hope that you will go well and far beyond those amounts to support these epicenters of compassion to abandoned, abused, and severely traumatized children.

We would love to have you join us next April 7, 2018 weekend!  Don't miss this one!!!
