The Headwaters of the Frio Marathon / Half Marathon is a challenging run / walk event across the rugged and isolated terrain of one of the most stunningly beautiful ranches in the Texas hill country. This inaugural event, held during Child Abuse Prevention month, highlights the vital mission of Hill Country Youth Ranch and Big Springs Ranch for Children which work to bring healing and restoration to children who have been victims of horrific abuse, abandonment and neglect.
The difficulties and obstacles experienced on the course are a metaphor for the “marathon” our children face daily; while the beauty and tranquility of our 7,050 acre ranch will impact and lift your spirit as it does the children who call this place home.

This is truly a special opportunity, and we’re looking for a special kind of participant! If you’re the kind of person who finds joy and fulfillment in physical challenges like full and half marathons, trail running or long distance hiking AND have a heart for worthy nonprofits like Hill Country Youth Ranch / Big Springs Ranch for Children, you’re just the unique kind of person we’re looking for! The event is limited to 150 total participants. We hope you can join us for this inaugural event!
This event is a fundraiser for the support of the Hill Country Youth Ranches, with a fundraising component for each participant, rather than a registration fee. We have established suggested goals for participants who want to engage in raising as much as possible for the cause, with special prizes for top fundraisers, as well as a minimum commitment to allow as many participants to join as possible.
We have established a minimum commitment of $500 per participant. For those with no significant fundraising experience, there will be lots of coaching tips and information to make your fundraising effective, engaging and fun! We believe this minimum is very attainable for anyone who follows the advice we provide in the Fundraising Tips section of the website, and we’ll be glad to communicate even more details and methods if you want them. You’ll certainly be helping us spread the word about a worthy cause.
For those who want to go for higher amounts, and join in some friendly competition for a great cause, we have set the goal of $100 per mile, or $2,620 for marathon participants and $1,310 for half marathon participants. These goals are tied to the registration types. Reaching these fundraising goals are not required to participate in the event but provide a clearly identifiable goal to pursue as you reach out to your community of family and friends for support. Teens can participate as well. We know some of you can raise even more than the recommended goals and highly encourage you to set your own stretch goal. We'll award special prizes for those who go above and beyond.
In addition, there will be extra special prizes for the individual fundraising champion and the top fundraising team. And each participant will receive a high-quality race T-shirt, and a hand-crafted commemorative medallion will be awarded to each marathon and half marathon course finisher. The race website will document each finisher’s time in each category.
You'll have 11 hours to complete the course and can choose from these categories of participation:
After signing up as an individual, you are welcome to form a team with a group of friends/co-workers if you want to run/walk the course with others and/or compete for the team fundraising prize.
